***For Sailors new to Lasers:***  (Already got one, go down for pertainent info)
Lasers are a great boat to start on due to their basic nature, but still challenging for experts in order for them to hone their skills.  Lasers are one of the most widely sailed boats in the world (with good reason), due to this fact, there have been many improvements in rigging and there have been more models and variations made.  For instance, the same hull of a Laser can be converted into three different boats using different sail areas.

These are the Standard Laser, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7 (descending sail area order).  These versions have different sail areas, thus different ideal crew weight requirements (see the Laser Sailing site for exact specs).  Actually, it is not uncommon to see someone who owns two different rigs for one boat.  They may use the standard rig for normal wind conditions and the Radial rig for heavy air conditions.

The Laser family has also grown in the way of hull variations.  Now, there are about 10 different hulls made around the world that are variations on the original Laser.  Some of these boats are not readily available in the United States at this point, but if we keep our hopes up maybe they'll come our way.

Here are the other boats that are in the "Laser Family":

There are more where this came from, but none of the boats are very close to be sold in the US, I don't think.  If you are interested and want more info, go to lasersailing.com and find out more.  Just a word from the wise, if you are interested in one of the other boats besides the Laser standard, radial, or 4.7, check your area for fleets or racing groups if that is what you are into.

***For Present Laser Owners:  (here's your kind of info)***
There is much to know about Lasers and their performance.  There is a great book out, called The Book of Laser Sailing by Dick Tillman.  It has all kinds of great tips on racing, rigging, and just about anything you can think of related to the Laser.  Make sure you have the newest version of the book, because every edition has been very different from the previous.  Rigging has changed drastically from the beginning of the Laser's life until now.  There are tips on putting in extra purchase, making things like the outhaul easier to adjust under sail and all kinds of stuff like that.  Happy Sailing!!
